SERIES 9
The photographs in this series explore the topological transformations of a small sheet of industrial gum rubber.
Gum rubber is dense, heavy, and relatively thick (1/8”). It is also supple and resilient, allowing it to be subjected to a process of continuous, i.e., non-tearing, deformation by means of bending, twisting, and inverting.
In reshaping the flat piece through successive foldings and turnings, I created objects exhibiting a small group of recurring structures: duct-like rolls, cavities, bulges, and circular and vent-shaped openings.
The photographs present the objects in a straight-forward way. The fluidity of the curvilinear forms is set off by the solidity suggested by the objects’ bilateral symmetry. This symmetry, which was deployed to provide stability through balance, also gives the forms simplicity and precision, qualities that have been highlighted in the photographs by framing and lighting.
